This is a red house, but it is not the red house, of Red House, Virginia
The Community of Red House, Virginia
Red House is a small unincorporated community at the junction of highways 727 and 615 in the northwest corner of Charlotte County. The community is surrounded by forests and farmland. Red House, Virginia, has a population of approximately 500 people. The community is also home to some small businesses, including a general store, a post office, a church, and, of course, a Dollar General.
There is a growing Amish community in the area, so if you are driving in the area, keep an eye out for slow-moving buggies.
Red House Highlights
- “The Redhouse” was mentioned in travel diaries as early as 1780
- Red House was first seen as a place name on a 1787 map drawn by Thomas Jefferson
- Martin Hancock built an old tavern in Red House around 1813 on the site of his earlier cabin
- The tavern was a noted stopping place and trade center on the old south road to the West
Ironically, this is not the “Red House”, The “Red House” is, if I am not mistaken, the White House across the street, where the historical marker is. I have no idea why the red house is currently white, I would have to think that maybe travelers in the area think it is still a taverna nd are looking for food and drink. Leave the people alone and get a snack and drink at the gas station or the Dollar General
This building was an antique and NicNak shop that has incurred storm damage.
